Guiding First Generation and English Learners pursue higher education

Experience

I currently have 6 years of experience working with high school students on their journey through the college exploration and application process. I have earned two Associates of Arts degrees from Rio Hondo Community College; in Social Behavior and Self-Development, General Education with an Emphasis in Behavioral Sciences. I am in the process of completing an undergraduate degree from Whittier College in Psychology, and I plan to pursue a Master’s degree in Educational Counseling from the University of La Verne (beginning Fall 2020)

Trainings:

-UndocuPoets Peer Ally Trained

-SAT Procter Certified (College Board Certification)

-UC System PIQ’s Trained

I use my personal and unique experiences to guide and help students pave their own way to a four-year degree. While in high school I identified with many characteristics that qualified me as an “at-risk” student, I was homeless, first-generation, and an English Learner but I managed to break the barriers that are assigned with these labels. A major component in my success was the accessibility to bilingual services in order to communicate with both parents and the community. Considering that I work predominantly with first-generation students, I want to assure that all students are offered the same resources regardless of a parent’s level of education.
